Halloween!

‘Tis that time of year where the ghouls and goblins come out. Only this year, we had to make sure they stayed 6 feet away, but we wanted to still distribute treats to any brave souls. As a result, it seemed like the perfect opportunity for something I’ve been wanting to do: build a catapult!

During a trip to the home improvement store, we picked up a few supplies (small panel of plywood, and a scrap piece of decking). I introduced the concept of a trebuchet to the boys, and asked them to design one. The result:

In addition to the launching of candy, we enjoyed getting the boys dressed up in costumes, carving jack-o’lanterns, and roasting pumpkin on the fire.

Halloween

Halloween arrived and we decided to drive to Saint Paul and cheer on TT as she ran in the Monster Dash. It wasn’t the best weather, but she did well. The highlight of this race is always observing the wide variety of costumes, including bananas, minions, and superheroes.

After the race and a nap, it was time to carve the pumpkins! We spent the afternoon giving our pumpkins faces, before donning costumes and visiting our neighbors. Even Grandma and Grandpa Fred were able to join us! The boys had a lot of fun trick-or-treating and the weather cooperated nicely!

Pumpkins, Tigers, and Crayons… Oh My!

Halloween is upon us! With October drawing to an end, it was time for Elise to quickly finish the costumes. In preparation for the big day, we carved out the pumpkins on Wednesday night. While Jacob was completely hands on and arms in, Henry was a bit more tentative about the slime. Each boy was able to design (draw) their own pumpkin face with help from Mom, who then carved them out. It was a pretty exciting night, and we got to make use of our sweet new aprons (from the orange big box hardware store).

After dinner on Friday, we bundled everyone up and into their costumes to make the rounds. It was a bit chilly, hovering around freezing with some wind, so the kids were a bit sparse overall. It was a short but good night, with a fair amount of candy to replenish our reserves.

Monster Dash

This past weekend we traveled to Saint Paul to witness the Monster Dash – a running event that focuses on runners wearing costumes. Outfits ranged from the usual superheroes to interesting, but slightly risqué barmaids, along with the occasional banana. Needless to say, the boys had a blast watching all the costumed characters running past. Overall, Laura ran a very good race and we were able to find her at three different spots.

The next day (Sunday), we spent some time making cupcakes for the boys to bring to daycare to celebrate the upcoming holiday. Yum!

Halloween 2013

The boys dressed up for Halloween and hit the street. Thanks to some wonderful sewing by Nonni, the two dressed up as Pooh Bear and Piglet. The Pooh bear originally had been worn by Elise when she was much smaller!

Enjoy these pictures from the night:

Term End, Sickness, and MLA Conference

The past two weeks have been pretty exciting at the Werth household.  Washington H.S. had its homecoming, with the end of the term the following week.  Finals went well and Elise wrapped up grading to prepare for the start of the new term today.  Meanwhile, Elise followed Jacob’s lead and came down with a virus; which she is starting to get over.  Jacob, on the other hand, had an ear infection but quickly rebounded after day 2 of his 10-day antibiotic schedule.

This past Thursday and Friday, I took off from work to give a presentation at the Midwest Chapter Music Library Assoc Conference.  The talk went well, with good feedback and interest, and I got to taste some of Indianapolis’ delicious craft beer!

In other news, the UI holds some promising job prospects that should develop in the coming weeks.  Also, Jacob ushered in two new firsts: two teeth are starting to come in and he stood up all by himself from a seated position (holding on to his jumper).  There will be plenty of pictures and videos coming soon, but for now enjoy these from Halloween!
