Holding Yale’s rare books collection, the Beinecke is constructed of 1.25 inch thick granite which blocks UV rays but lets in a warm glow. The inner section – called the glass stacks – is a tightly controlled chamber. Due to the lack of oxygen within, a librarian can only last approx 60 minutes in the stacks. If there is a fire, a suppression system will remove all oxygen entirely.
